Tips to design your trip in Mongolia

Be realistic and do not anticipate a very intensive route that will challenge your stamina on the bumps of dirt roads and test your back and stomach unless you plan an absolutely sporting raid. Count on the following optimum: average car speed of 30 km/hour and 5–6 hours in car per day.

Do not exclude that you may have to shorten your route due to unforeseeable circumstances such as local weather conditions, medical quarantines, etc. or to modify it spontaneously in order to experience an exciting event on the road (a local naadam, traditional ceremony, wedding, etc). It is important to let your emotions thrill.

No need to "make" all "tourist attractions" of the country to be enchanted by the scenery and the spirit of the nomadic people.

The landscapes and skies are sumptuous everywhere and there is no need to move far away from the capital city to be in the middle of nowhere in the infinity of steppes and encounter magic meetings out of time.

Note that the large strokes indicating the principal axes, when you look at the map, are only dirt roads that are practically everywhere in Mongolia. The few asphalt roads are often worse than the dirt trails.

We advise to spend some time by a lake or a river and relax (hiking, horse riding , fishing, and swimming)

You will have to cross small towns in countryside on the road for food / drinfs and fuel supply

We will advise you, based on our huge experience in the countryside, to define the best suitable route according to your wishes and possibilities.

Some suggestions of routes and service examples

Jeep tours

Travelling by 4x4 vehicle is the most convenient way to discover the country and his huge distances.

Below we present some basic routes that we offer as tours and the following can be the basis for our discussion on your trip design.

Tours are classified by duration: 7 days, 14 days, 19 days, 21 days, 28 days..

All these routes can be modified according to your needs and wishes, especially the daily rhythm, which can be changed to fit your preference. A detailed offer will be sent upon request.

All these routes are based on an average of 6 hours on the road per travel day. We also organize some circuits, including several days of horse riding and/or trekking if you wish, please review our ideas for alternative programs.

Trip J1. 7-days program

Ulaanbaatar - Arkhangai - Ulaanbaatar

Travel in the vast steppes of the central area and Arkhangai mountains. To the south-east of Ulaanbaatar, you will see the northern edge of the Gobi desert - an infinite steppe with rocky mountains in middle. You will also find small sand dunes. Discover the picturesque valley of the Orkhon river, waterfalls, Tovhon monastery situated on top of forest mountains, visit Kharhorin - the ancient capital of Chinggis Khan’s Empire and Erdenezuu monastery. On the way to Ulaanbaatar, you cross Elsentasarhai, an area consisting of mixes of all landscapes: mountains, sands and rivers.

Also visit Hustai national park and see wild horse Takhi – the only, truly wild horse remaining on Earth.

Zorgol Khairkhan mountain

In brief:

Total distance: around 1000 km

Program: 1 day in Ulaanbaatar and 6 days of jeep touring with horse riding in Bayan Onjuul and in Orkhon valley.

Trip J2. 14 days program - Option 1

Ulaanbaatar - Gobi - Arkhangai - Ulaanbaatar

Explore the mythical Gobi Desert, steppes and mountains in the central part of the country. While going down to the south Gobi you will travel into endless steppes and see beautiful rock formations in the middle of the steppe, "Flaming Cliffs" in Bayanzag, famous for dinosaur eggs and other fossils, the ice canyon of Yoliin Am, where you can see wild goats, sheep and birds.

Visit the dunes of Khongorin els – one of the biggest sand dunes in Mongolia. Enjoy camel riding and discover the flora and fauna of the Gobi desert.

Trip J4. 19 days program

Ulaanbaatar - Olgii - Altai mountains - Arkhangai - Ulaanbaatar

Discover the majestic Altai Mountains and its snow-capped peaks, see the holy peaks of Altai Tavan bogd and its glaciers, and discover the pristine lakes and rivers in western Mongolia. The area has rich remains of old traces: petroglyphs, stone men, and burial mounds. We will explore the most isolated region of Mongolia. Visit nomadic Kazakh families who train and hunt with golden eagles and see how Kazakh women decorate their ger (yurt) with her handmade colorful embroideries.

See Mongol Els (Mongol Sands) – the biggest singing sand dunes with the far panorama of the snowcapped Altai mountains. Mongol Els is the biggest sand dunes of Mongolia. See the fresh water lake Ereen in the middle of the sand dunes.

The above prices correspond to the following services based on a group of 4 persons, and they can be adapted according the size of the group, starting from 2 persons :

· 2 nights in hotel (double room basis) in Ulaanbaatar and other nights in tents or gers (yurts);

· Exclusive use of one 4x4 vehicle for the duration of the stay (or more depending of the size of the group). Fuel and lubricants supply, vehicle maintenance and service;

· Support team of 2 guides: an interpreter/cook and a driver/mechanic; Including their food and accomodation;

Horseriding & Nomadic stays

We present below some basic routes that we can arrange for you to take through our nomadic partner-friends who welcome us to their ger (yurt), share with us their nomadic life and hospitality, provide us with horses, local guidance and equipment.

These routes can be the basis for our discussion on your trip design.

Routes are classified by areas where horse riding take place:

Central Mongolia

North Mongolia

West Mongolia

East Mongolia

You can ride horses in different places, with transfers by car between the places. To protect horses, we recommend that the duration of one horse-riding session stay less than 10 days.

All these routes can be modified according to your needs and wishes, especially the daily rhythm, which can be changed to fit your preference. A detailed offer adjusted to your arrival dates, number of horse riding days and other details will be sent to you upon request.

All these routes are based on an average of 6 hours riding each day. During your horse riding, you can stay one to several days with nomadic family participating in daily activities of nomadic life and caring for horses, cattle, goat, sheep, and processing of milk products.

Horse riding can be part of your jeep tour. Usually we have car support on horse riding days, the car carries luggage and food, we can meet you at lunch and camp places in the evening. In some areas, there are no roads for cars, in this case we will use packhorses, camels or yaks to carry food and camping materials and an additional assistant horseman to handle packhorses.

We specially provide you softly fixed, comfortable Russian style saddles.

Trip H1. Horse riding in Bayan Onzuul

Explore northern edge of Gobi Desert in Bayan Onzuul area – about 150 km south of Ulaanbaatar. It is an open semi-desert flat area and a beautiful rocky mountain in middle of the steppe. There is

also a small area with sand dunes. Visit nomadic families, stay with nomads in their ger and experience how people and animals live in this dry area.

Convenient for 1 to 3 days of horse riding with nomadic stay.

We introduce to you 4 days horseriding total 7 days.

This place can be reached by car from Ulaanbaatar within 5 hours on dirt road.

Trip H2. Horse riding in Gungaluut

Explore Gungaluut nature reserve, about 150 km east of Ulaanbaatar. It is an open steppe area surrounded by gentle mountains. Visit Kherlen river valley. See the wild sheep Argali and visit nomadic families.

Convenient for 1 to 3 days of horse riding with nomadic stay.

We introduce to you 4 days horseriding, total 7 days.

This place can be reached by car from Ulaanbaatar within 4 hours: 120 km of asphalt road and about 30 km dirt road.

Trip H3. Horse riding in Hovsgol lake area

Pearl blue lake water, surrounding forest and snow-capped Sayan mountain range makes it an excellent area to ride horses in this area in the north of Mongolia.

You can make 1 to 14 days of horse riding here.

There could be several options of routes:

horse riding in the west shore and Darhad valley, horse riding in east shore of the lake and hot spring, horse riding in a full circle around the lake.

West bank of Khovsgol lake

Due to road conditions, it is not possible to have car support while you ride horse in the Khovsgol lake area.

e-Mongol’s experienced horse guides will take care of luggages on packhorses. Also, you can visit nomadic families.

Khovsgol lake can be reached by a 4x4 car or a direct flight between Ulaanbaatar and Khatgal – a small town at the south shore of the lake.

We propose to mix Jeep tour Trip J3 with this horse riding program.

Trip: H3A. Horseriding in Khovsgol lake’s west shore – Darhad valley

Ride a horse along the west of shore to the north for 6 days, then change direction to west and cross Khoridol saridag mountain range.

You will reach Darhadiin khotgor, which is considered the most beautiful area of Mongolia, because of its numerous small lakes and rivers, open valley surrounded with snowcapped mountains.

From Khatgal to Darhad valley town Renchinlhumbe, it requires 6 days of horse riding.

Coming back from Renchinlhumbe to Khatgal (not following the same road) will require another 4 days, total 10 days of horse riding;

Trip: H3B. Horse riding Khovsgol lake’s east shore – Hot spring

Compared to the western shore, the eastern shore is flatter and more open with semi-forest mountains and valleys.

We will see snow capped mountains cross the lake on the west shore.

Ride a horse along the lake shore for 1 day and then the route goes far from lake into forest mountains and river valleys.

The Hot spring is located about 60 km from the town of Khatgal at the Arshaanii Tsagaan gol (white river of mineral water).

Locals come to this hot spring to have medical baths and drink the water. There are small wooden houses for hot baths.

East bank of Khovsgol lake

From Khatgal to Hotspring, it requires 3 days of horseriding.

Coming back from the hot spring to Khatgal (not following the same road) will require another 3 days, 1 day rest in hot spring.

Total 11 days of horse riding.

Trip H3C. Horseriding around the Khovsgol lake

	We will be horse riding in most remote areas. In the north of the lake, you will get a close view of the co-existence of the Holy Father Mount Burenkhaan and the widest mother ocean Khovsgol. This circle discovers Khovsgol lake fully.

Trip H4. Horse riding in Orkhon Valley and Naiman lake

Orkhon river valley, waterfalls and Naiman lake are one of the ideal places to horse ride in the central part of Mongolia.

Picturesque Orkhon valley, surrounding semi-forest mountains and a lively settlement of nomads make this place well attractive.

It is also one of the best places to experience a nomadic stay, as this area is famous with airag (fermented mares milk) and processing of milk products.

Naiman lake

Along your horse riding route, you could stay in one place for several days, staying with a nomadic family and experiencing nomadic life, participating in everyday activities, caring for cattle, sheep, horses, and processing milk products.

Horse riding can be made for 1 to 10 days.

We introduce to you 5 days horseriding from Naiman lake till Tovkhon monastery, total 9 days trip.

The area is easily reachable from Ulaanbaatar by a 4x4 car in 2 days or 1 day of intensive driving.

Trip H5. Horse riding in Altai mountains and Altai Tavan Bogd area

Discover the majestic Altai Mountains and its snow-capped peaks, see holy peaks of Altai Tavan bogd and its glassier, and discover pristine lakes and rivers of western Mongolia.

The area has rich remains of old traces: petroglyphs, stone men and burial mounds. We will explore the most isolated part of Mongolia.

Visit nomadic Kazakh families who train

and hunt with golden eagles and see how Kazakh women decorate their ger (yourt) with her handmade colorful embroideries.

Horse riding can be organized with camel support, luggage is carried on camelback.

Khurgan lake

From Altai Tavan Bogd to Hurgan lake will require 5 days of horse riding, total 12 days.

Trip H6. Horse riding in Uvs lake and Boorog sand

Discover the pristine lakes of great depression in the north west part of Mongolia and Boorog Deliin els – the most northern sand dunes on the earth. Our local guide in Zuungobi soum will guide your horse riding tour in Boorog deliin Els where we will see hidden treasures of these lost sand dunes: spring in sand, fresh water lake inside sand dunes and desert plants.

See the biggest lake of Mongolia Uvs, see birds, flora and fauna. Go south, cross Khanhohiin Nuruu (Khanhoh mountain range) and reach to Khyargas lake.

Trip H7. Horse riding in Altai Mountains in Khovd, Nomadic move

Munkhhairhan mountains

Discover the majestic Altai Mountains and its snow-capped peaks. See the holy peak Munkhhairhan. Nomadic people in this area used to move through mountain passes on camel back, in spring (mid June): from river valleys to Mountains, in autumn: back from the mountains to lower altitude (mid August). In the past, nomads moved hundreds of kilometers and it was the most exotic and long nomadic move. Participate in a nomadic move and experience part of the nomadic life in this most remote part of Altai mountain range.

The area can be reached by local flight from Ulaanbaatar to Khovd, or it can be part of a Jeep tour.

Total 12 days, 7 days horseriding starting from Duut around Monkhhairkhan mountains back to Khovd by Mankhan.

Trip T1. Trekking in Altai Tavan Bogd and the Mongol Els sand dunes

This trip is a combination of trekking and jeep tours in 2 different parts of the country. Altai Tavan Bogd is the most mountainous part of the trip,

while the Mongol Els sand dunes are located at the lowest altitudes of the country.

Trip T2. Trekking in Naiman Lake and Orkhon Valley

This is a 5-day trekking trip in Naiman Lake and Orkhon Valley.

Visit nomadic families, stay with nomadic families, discover the mountain lakes of Naiman Nuur, the picturesque valley of Orkhon River and its waterfalls, Tovhon Monastery situated on top of forest mountains, visit Kharhorin - the ancient capital of Chinggis Khan’s Empire and the Erdenezuu monastery.

Trip W2 Selfdriving trip on frozen Khovsgol lake

10 days - Ulaanbaatar - Khovsgol lake - Ulaanbaatar

The Khovsgol lake, also named "Blue pearl of Mongolia" located in north-west of Mongolia close to Siberia, is a large (135 km x 35 km) big blue pristine lake surrounded by wild mountains and taïga where lives reinders and a large amount of wild animal species.

This area experiences low temperatures dropping down to - 50°C in coldest period, and the lake freezes 5 monthes during the year. The solid ice makes it used as local transportation way during this time.

We offer you the unique oportunity of adventurous drive and discovery on the lake and its shores.

You will cross the lake from the south to north and return, driving on crystal ice and in untouched snow on shores and moutains tracks.

Meetings with local nomads and traditional events will spiced your route.

Our guides will introduce you to the local way of life in winter, and you will have opportunity to participate or attend traditional activies, like horse sledge or ice fishing.

Our robust japanese jeeps (Toyota Land Cruiser, or similar) will offer you their efficiency and comfort to drive safely on these frozen grounds.

Eagle festival

Mongolia’s extreme far West is home to many ethnic groups as Kazakhs, Tuvinians, Durvuds and Urianhais, most of whom live in Bayan-Ulgii aimag nestled in the picturesque Altai Mountain range.
Kazakhs have a long-lived tradition of hunting small animals with specially trained eagles that dates back to old times when hunting was an important additional source of living to nomads who relied on livestock and wildlife hunting. In the rigorous climate of Altai Mountains, hunting was also a source of fur and hair used in clothing. While Kazakh men hunted foxes and rabbits with eagles, women made nicely decorated fur hats and coats to be worn during extremely cold winters.
Eagle training requires special skills and is done by trainers who carefully combine feeding and training to make this magnificent free-spirited bird hunt for the need of man. Trained eagles stay quite during the year and are fed well by trainers.
Early October is the start of the hunting season. The winter cold comes closer and animals develop thicker and warmer fur getting ready for winter. As the hunting season approaches, Kazakhs prepare their eagles for hunting: less food makes the eagle more aggressive and more fast-flying.
Nowadays, eagle training is less of a life need and more a tradition and part of culture. The Golden Eagle Festival is held every year and is a two-day venue for people and eagle hunters from around the province to gather together and show off the nicest, fastest and best trained eagles.
The eagle festival is accompanied by other festivities of local ethnic groups, including traditional music and dance concerts, sports games and shows of best dresses and costumes. The festival participants have an opportunity to take with themselves traditional products of this region, which is famous by its colorful handmade embroideries, especially those made by Kazakh women.
